Carnivore Diet Tips for Real Results: Eat Smarter, Heal Faster, Live Stronger
Ready to take on the carnivore diet with no nonsense—just the good stuff? I’ve been through the highs, the lows, and a fair share of bellyaches, and I’m here to help you skip the guesswork. Whether you’re just starting out or already a devoted meat-lover, I’ve got tips, hard-earned lessons, and a few laughs to guide you through your carnivore journey. Let’s make this as enjoyable as it is meaty!
Explore practical, science-backed strategies to thrive on the carnivore diet — from overcoming constipation and navigating social situations, to boosting fat adaptation, healing the gut, and mastering the mindset behind lasting success.
Lesson 1: Oxalate Dumping and Adaptation
When transitioning from a plant-heavy diet to a carnivore one, the first lesson learned was dealing with the symptoms of oxalate dumping. After years of consuming high-oxalate foods, the body undergoes significant changes, and oxalate dumping can occur. This happens when the body releases stored oxalates, leading to discomfort and symptoms like bloating, gas, and general fatigue.
To help soften the effects of oxalate dumping, it is recommended to include a small amount of lemon juice during the adaptation phase to carnivore.
Lesson 2: Meal Timing – A Game Changer
One of the biggest adjustments I made was when I ate, not just what I ate. Transitioning to a carnivore diet taught me that meal timing matters—a lot. I used to eat late in the evening, only to wake up feeling sluggish and off my game the next day. Shifting my meals to earlier in the day made a massive difference—better digestion, steadier energy, and no more late-night discomfort. It’s a simple change, but one that delivers serious results.

Lesson 3: Keeping It Interesting—Variety in the Carnivore Diet
One of the biggest complaints about the carnivore diet? Monotony. If you’re only eating meat, butter, and eggs day in and day out, you might start feeling like you’re trapped in a never-ending steakhouse—without the thrill. But the truth is, with a little creativity and a few simple tweaks, you can keep your meals exciting, enjoyable, and completely carnivore-approved.
Here’s how to mix things up without straying from the plan:
Tip 1: Play with Temperature
Who says meat has to be eaten hot every time? Switching up the temperature of your food can completely change its texture and experience. Try eating leftover meats cold or at room temperature—you’ll be surprised at how different (and delicious) they can taste.
Tip 2: Elevate with Sauces & Condiments
A perfectly cooked steak is a thing of beauty, but sometimes you need a little extra flair. Experiment with carnivore-friendly sauces to keep things interesting:
-
Raw egg yolk – A rich, creamy dip that adds depth to any meat.
-
Hot sauce – As long as it’s clean and free from sugar or seed oils, a good spicy kick can work wonders.
-
Bone marrow butter – Melt it over your steak for a luxurious, nutrient-packed boost.
At the end of the day, this journey isn’t about perfection—it’s about moving in the right direction. Small adjustments over time will keep you engaged, help you stay on track, and most importantly, make carnivore a lifestyle you actually enjoy.
Tip 3: Prioritise Electrolytes
Feeling sluggish, crampy, or headachy? It’s probably not the diet—it’s your electrolytes. Many people don’t realise how critical sodium, potassium, and magnesium are on carnivore. Make sure you’re getting enough by:
-
Salting your food generously with a high-quality salt.
-
Drinking electrolyte-infused water if needed.
-
Listening to your body—if you’re feeling off, it’s likely a mineral imbalance.
DIY Clean Electrolyte Mix
Ingredients:
✔ 75g unrefined sea or kalahari salt (sodium chloride) – Supports hydration, nerve function, and muscle contractions.
✔ 11.5g potassium chloride (also called Sodium-Free Salt) – Helps regulate blood pressure, muscle function, and electrolyte balance.
✔ 11.7g magnesium malate or glycinate – Malate boosts energy & muscle recovery, while glycinate promotes relaxation & sleep. I mix half of both.
Instructions:
- Blend the sea or kalahari salt into a fine powder for easier dissolving (optional).
- Weigh out or use a measuring spoon for each ingredient and mix thoroughly.
- Store in an airtight container.
- For a single serving, mix ½ heaping teaspoon (about 2-2.5gms) of the blend into 500ml purified water (or adjust based on your needs)..
- Shake well before each use, as the ingredients may settle.
- Optional: Add a couple of drops of lemon juice if you feel the need to zhush up the taste!
- Add Enjoy pure electrolytes without unnecessary additives!
Electrolytes are the unsung heroes of the carnivore diet. If you’re feeling off, it’s rarely the diet itself—it’s usually a mineral imbalance. Prioritising sodium, potassium, and magnesium will keep you energised, cramp-free, and thriving. Keep it simple: salt your food well, hydrate wisely, and use a clean electrolyte mix when needed. Listen to your body—it knows what it needs!

Lesson 4: Social Challenges and Party Situations
Let’s be honest—navigating social events on a carnivore diet can be a bit of a minefield. You’re surrounded by tempting foods you used to eat, people questioning your choices, and the occasional well-meaning friend insisting, “Just have one bite!”
The real challenge at these gatherings isn’t just the food—it’s dealing with the questions, the scepticism, and the occasional raised eyebrow. That’s why it’s crucial to go in prepared, confident, and committed to why you’re doing this in the first place.
Tip 4: Eat Before Going Out
One of the simplest ways to avoid temptation? Don’t show up hungry. If you know the food options won’t align with your diet, eat beforehand so you’re full, satisfied, and not even slightly tempted by the bread basket.
If it’s a casual gathering at a friend’s house, bring your own carnivore-friendly snacks—whether that’s some biltong, hard cheese, or fatty cold cuts. That way, you won’t feel left out, and you won’t have to explain why you’re ignoring the snack table.
At the end of the day, this lifestyle is about doing what’s best for you—not pleasing everyone else. You don’t need to justify your choices to anyone. Just stick to what makes you feel your best, laugh off the curiosity, and enjoy the event your way.

Lesson 5: Digestive Issues – Loose Stools
If you’ve just started the carnivore diet and suddenly find yourself rushing to the bathroom, don’t panic—it’s a common part of the transition. Your body is adjusting to a higher fat intake, and sometimes, it struggles to digest all that rich, delicious animal fat in one go.
The good news? It’s temporary—and there are a few simple ways to smooth things out (pun intended).
Tip 5: Handling Digestive Discomfort
If loose stools or diarrhea are becoming an issue, here’s what you can do:
-
Avoid consuming melted fats directly. That golden, liquid fat from your ground beef? Don’t pour it over your meal. Instead, save it for cooking later.
-
Let your meat cool slightly before eating. Eating piping hot meat straight off the grill can be harder on digestion. Letting it rest a bit can make a surprising difference.
-
Give your body time to adjust. Your digestive system is adapting—it just needs time to regulate. Stick with it, and things will settle.
As with any change, your body needs time to find its balance. This isn’t about perfection—it’s about learning what works for you and adjusting along the way. Keep going, and soon, your digestion will be as strong as your willpower.

Lesson 6: Understanding Constipation on Carnivore
One of the biggest misconceptions about the carnivore diet? Thinking you’re constipated just because you’re not running to the loo every day. But here’s the truth: less waste in means less waste out.
Since animal foods are highly bioavailable, your body absorbs nearly everything—leaving very little to eliminate. No fibre, no bulk, no unnecessary roughage to push through. So, if you’re not going daily, that doesn’t mean something is wrong. It just means your body is working efficiently.
Common Causes of Constipation
- Gut Adaptation – Your body adjusts to higher fat, lower food volume, and more protein.
- Gut Bacteria Shift – Fiber-loving bacteria die off; fat-digesting bacteria take over.
- Low Stomach Acid – Meat digestion requires strong acidity, which takes time to increase.
- Bile Production – Your gallbladder ramps up bile to process more fat.
- Too Much Protein, Not Enough Fat – Prioritise fatty cuts like ribeye and lamb.
- Dehydration & Electrolytes – Low sodium, potassium, and magnesium can slow digestion.
- Dairy Sensitivity – Cheese can bind digestion for some people.
When Should You Be Concerned?
- If you feel bloated, blocked, or uncomfortable, then yes, there may be an issue.
-
If you simply go less often but feel fine, there’s nothing to fix—your body is doing exactly what it should.
What to Do If You Need Relief:
✔ Hydrate & Balance Electrolytes – Sodium, potassium, and magnesium are crucial.
✔ Support Digestion – Supplement with ox bile or HCL if needed.
✔ Reduce Dairy – Cheese can slow digestion for some. Cut back if necessary.
✔ Boost Collagen – Add a teaspoon of unflavoured gelatin/collagen to your morning coffee.
✔ Stay Active – Movement helps keep your digestion on track.
✔ Avoid Inflammatory Foods – Stick to clean, fatty meats for optimal digestion.
At the end of the day, carnivore digestion is different from fibre-filled diets—and that’s a good thing. Trust your body—it knows exactly what it’s doing.
Lesson 7: Community and Support
Starting a carnivore diet can feel like stepping into uncharted territory—especially when you realise how few people around you eat this way. Support is everything.
At first, you might expect to find a large, like-minded crowd, but the reality is that social settings can feel isolating. People will question your choices, and some will call it extreme—ironically, far less so than plant-based diets.
Expect Criticism—Build Resilience
When others challenge your choices, remember: this is your health, your journey. The longer you stick with it, the stronger and more confident you become.
Arm Yourself with Knowledge
One of the best ways to stay committed is to educate yourself. The more you understand about the science of carnivore eating, the easier it becomes to dismiss myths and misinformation. That’s exactly why I created Biltong & Beyond—to provide powerful, eye-opening information that helps you take charge of your health with confidence.
