How Seed Oils Are Processed

Seed oils, like canola, sunflower, soy, and corn oil, are processed in a highly industrialised manner that strips them of any natural nutrients and makes them toxic to the body. The process they undergo is what makes them rancid and harmful to health. Here’s how it works:

The Processing of Seed Oils

  1. Extraction: The seeds are first crushed to extract their oil. Most commonly, this is done using a method called solvent extraction, where chemical solvents (usually hexane) are used to draw out the oil from the seeds. This method is cheap and efficient, but it leaves behind chemical residues in the oil.
  2. Refining: After extraction, the oil is refined through a series of steps.
  3. Degumming: The oil is washed to remove any impurities.
  4. Neutralisation: Any free fatty acids are neutralised with an alkali to improve taste.
  5. Bleaching: The oil is treated with bleaching agents to make it visually appealing, removing any natural colour.
  6. Deodorising: This step uses high heat to remove the strong, often rancid smell from the oil, creating the bland, neutral aroma we associate with these oils.
  7. Hydrogenation (optional): Sometimes, seed oils are further processed through hydrogenation, where hydrogen is added to the oil to turn liquid fats into solid ones (like margarine). This process creates trans fats, which are even more harmful to health.

When you consume oxidised oils, you’re essentially ingesting these harmful molecules, which contribute to chronic inflammation and disease.

  • Trans Fats: During hydrogenation, trans fats are created, which are extremely harmful. Trans fats increase bad cholesterol (LDL) and decrease good cholesterol (HDL), leading to a higher risk of heart disease. They also disrupt the normal functioning of cells and can contribute to inflammation, insulin resistance, and metabolic disorders.
  • Nutrient Depletion: The refining process strips away any beneficial nutrients that might have been present in the original seed. Essential vitamins like vitamin E, which acts as an antioxidant, are removed, leaving behind an oil that lacks any nutritional value. Essentially, these oils are a source of empty calories, providing little to no benefit to your body.
